Kaufman County ARES, Inc. would like to welcome you to 2009. With
this new year, we are planning on finishing and expanding our repeater system. We are still in need of help in building our original repeater system. We still hold our coordination for our frequency and need to get a repeater on the air. While it is know that a repeater is not always needed, the benefit of having a repeater out-ways not having one. There will be many times in the operation of Kaufman County ARES or for the benefit of amateur radio operators in general that will require a repeater and one that is centrally located to allow for the best communications throughout the county and beyond.
The only repeater in Kaufman County that had the ability to reach over 95% of the area has been taken off of the air. For more than 5 months now, it had been turned off, with no sign of it being brought back on the air. Currently, the only other repeaters that operate in the Kaufman County area do not have the ability to cover a large portion of the county, nor can they be linked together to create a larger repeater. Hence, why Kaufman County ARES, Inc. has been working to get a repeater up in the center region of the county that can be used by all.
The goal for our repeater program is to develop several fixed repeaters on various frequency ranges and a couple of mobile repeaters that we can deploy to disaster areas. With our system in place we will be able to better serve the agencies that we work with and the citizens and visitors of our county. In some emergency situations, our systems might even be able to be used by Amateur Radio Operators outside of the local region. This could end up being a lifeline for someone you know or even you.
Most types of two-way radio communications rely on a repeater somewhere. Whether its for a police or fire department or your local Amateur Radio club. This system is being developed and will be maintained by Kaufman County ARES, Inc. and its members, along with other Amateur Radio Operators that wish to contribute to the system, but it will remain free and available to all that wish to use it.
