Alternative Energy
windmill_animated_slow.gif    We are going GREEN.  As we work to create new projects, develop our repeaters and more, we have decided to try and use alternative power solutions to operate them.  Whether it is from the sun or wind, the need to have power that does not have to be provided by the eletric company makes our choice to go green easy.

Through the help of some individuals, how have created their own electricity for over 15 years, we are exploring the options we have to create our own solar and/or wind power stations.  With their help, we should be able to build our own systems for far less than what it would cost to purchase them.  We would like to thank them for their kind donation and support in this project and hope to work with them for a long time on this.  If you are interested in where our information came from, you can find it here.

At the family level a disaster can be as simple as the power going out. In the summer  a simple power outage can ruin food in the freezer and refrigerator and send us back to the stone ages in quite a hurry. With a simple wind generator or solar system that can be integrated into your present power system, or set up as an emergency power source for your home you won't have to worry any longer. It is not a very difficult project either, but your family will be much better protected in the event that the power does go out. Alternative energy is the best source of emergency power.  Les Oke

Since we are located in North-East Texas, we have the option to choose both solar power or wind power.  Our repeaters need to be able to have power 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  So using the options that we have been presented along with some batteries for storage of excess power, we can create a system that will meet the needs of our program and the needs of Amateur Radio Operators in the area alike.  Our first project will be a hybrid of both a solar generator and a wind generator that will be used to suplement any power that is received from a standard powerline.  In the future, it will be converted to provide 100% of the power needed for the operation.WindPo2.jpg

In the near future, we plan on attempting to build a mobile solar and wind generation system, that can be deployed in a disaster area or public event, to provide the electricity that we need to proivde our operation to those that we are assisting.  The system would have to be designed to be small enough to be carried in a mini-van/pickup truck or even a passenger car, but still be able to provide the needed power to get the job done.

With the guidance of our sponsor, we have been shown ways to obtain the needed supplies for next to nothing or even free in some cases.  They are willing to work with us hand in hand to get the progjects done as we move forward and have been here to hear our concerns and answer our questions.

The techniques that we will be using to power our repeaters can be used by individual home owners and others to power their IMG_3762.JPGproeprty.  As we move forward, we will be looking for ways to incorporate all of these options into powering and facilities that we operate, so that we are better able to control our power and reduce the amount of funds we have to pay out, while at the same time helping the enviroment.
